Rehearsals for the world premiere of FANS, a new theatre show created and directed by Melanie Rashbrooke and written by emerging playwright Nina Berry (with additional material by Melanie Rashbrooke and the cast), are currently underway.
This exciting collaboration brings together a team of eight North East theatre makers and musicians to create a completely new and original piece of work that will tour the North East this September and October.
Director Melanie Rashbrooke and writer Nina Berry collaborate to create a touching, funny and entertaining new show about music fandom and the impact music can have on identity.
FANS is part gig and part theatre. It’s an eclectic mix of stories told through live music, scripted drama and verbatim theatre.
As writer Nina explains:
‘FANS is a playful mixture of music, storytelling and real life fan confessions which, takes a look at how our connection to music can help bring people together, shape our identity and most importantly keep us young at heart. Fast paced and full of humour, FANS is a show for all generations of music fans and lovers alike. It’s a real privilege to be working with The Six Twenty and I’m incredibly excited to be collaborating with such a talented cast and creative team.’
FANS is part of this year’s Bridging the Gap scheme, an ARC initiative with Arts Centre Washington, Alnwick Playhouse and Northern Stage, set up to aid the development of new work and support emerging theatre makers in the North East.
As ARC’s Programmer Manager Chloe Lawrence explains:
‘There were many worthy Bridging the Gap proposals, but The Six Twenty’s application was so strong that they were selected as this year’s recipient. We’re incredibly excited to be working with The Six Twenty on FANS, and are really looking forward to supporting the company engage and develop new audiences.’
As director Melanie explains:
‘It’s a really exciting and ambitious new show for The Six Twenty. With the support of Bridging the Gap, we’re able to work with some brilliant new collaborators for this project. It’s promises to be a raucous, fun and moving tribute to music lovers’
The company recently presented a work-in-progress extract of the show at ARC’s and received some great audience feedback:
‘I loved it.’
‘I felt like you were describing my life. I can’t wait to see the full show’
‘Brilliant performances. I can’t wait to see how it develops’
